You may have seen some chewing gum brands that have the ADA or American Academy of Dentistry seal of approval. What does this mean? Does this mean chewing gum is healthy for your teeth? We’ll answer all these questions and more in this video. Hi I’m Dr William Park with Blessed Smile and Smile on You Dentistry. Today we’ll be talking about chewing gum and how it can affect your teeth and oral health. Chewing gum has been around since ancient times. There are reports of ancient people from many different areas that chewed on tree sap. This evolved into what we know as gum which is made of a blend of synthetic elastomers/resins, flavors, colors, and some kind of sweetener. The act of chewing gum is actually beneficial to your teeth, especially after a meal. The physical act of chewing stimulates salivary flow. Additional flavors can also act even more as a salivary stimulant. Studies show that salivary flow rate is significant greater while chewing sweetened and flavored chewing gum as opposed to unsweetened unflavored chewing gum base.
